Technical Writer Sr Advisor

Technical writers are responsible for the management of the consistency of technical written content. The ideal candidate will have proven success in a highly technical field, such as cybersecurity, software development, computer science, or engineering. Also important in this role are an ability to evaluate and analyze complex information and a natural desire to help people understand it.

Objectives of this role

  • Develop comprehensive documentation that meets organizational standards

  • Gain deep understanding of systems and services, and translate complex information into simple, polished, engaging content

  • Write user-friendly content that meets the needs of target audience, turning insights into language for user success

  • Develop and maintain detailed repository of reference materials, including research, usability tests, and design specifications

  • Evaluate current content and develop innovative methods for improvement

Responsibilities

  • Research, outline, write, and edit content, working closely with various departments to understand sensitive project requirements

  • Gather information from engineer and subject-matter experts to develop, organize, and write capability development document, directives, policy memorandums, procedure manuals, technical specifications, and process documentation

  • Under general direction, write technical copy for various type of documents for a program/project of similar complexity.

  • Revise documents according to internal specifications and user/customer feedback.

  • Build presentations and project documentation as requested using government furnished hardware and software.

  • Update spreadsheet daily on the status of workflow products.

  • Work with development and support leads to identify documentation repositories, revise and edit, and determine best solutions for data compilation and centralized storage

  • Research, create, and maintain information architecture templates that adhere to organizational and government standards and allow for easy data migration or searchability

  • Develop content in alternative media forms for maximum usability, with consistent voice across all documentation

Required skills and qualifications

  • A writing sample with more than 500 words with emphasis on technical content is required

  • 10+ years of related experience or equivalent in technical documentation field

  • Proven ability to quickly learn and understand complex technical and programmatic subject matter

  • Experience in writing documentation and procedure manuals for various audiences

  • Superb written communication skills, with a keen eye for detail

  • Experience in working with engineers to improve user experience (ex: design, UI), refine content, and create visuals and diagrams for technical support content

  • Ability to handle multiple projects simultaneously

Preferred skills and qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree (or equivalent) in journalism, communications, business, computer science, engineering or information systems, or equivalent combination of education, technical certifications or training, or work experience. Minimum 10 years of technical writing experience assurance or equivalent experience with technical documentation

  • Proven ability to distill complex information into clear, concise text.

  • Excellent writing and grammar skills and ability to work independently and deliver accurate content under deadline pressure.

  • Experience designing and delivering developer-oriented documentation as well as working directly with development teams.

  • Experienced using multiple tools to develop base templates and manipulate output styles.

  • Possess a thorough understanding of software development (SDLC), IC ITE, Risk Management Framework (RMF), and other key IT terminology.

  • Previous experience in cybersecurity is a benefit

  • Advanced writing and editing skills.

  • Experienced with user documentation.

  • Quick learner who pays careful attention to detail.

  • Able to work in an environment using on-premise and cloud based systems.

  • Demonstrates excellent leadership and collaboration abilities, along with solid time management and problem solving skills.

  • Professional certifications (ex: Society for Technical Communication)

  • Experience in using XML tools to create documentation

The likely salary range for this position is $123,250 - $166,750. This is not, however, a guarantee of compensation or salary. Rather, salary will be set based on experience, geographic location and possibly contractual requirements and could fall outside of this range.
