Job Description

GENERAL SUMMARY: Model, develop, implement and test mathematical software based simulations of electrical power and machinery systems for the US Navy. This will involve study, evaluation and analysis of various equipment and system designs to form dynamical Models in Matlab/Simulink for the purpose of Real-Time simulation. This may require the evaluation and system identification of actual system test data and lab results. Expected to work with a team of engineers and technicians to complete deliverable applications and coordinate with government sites and ship platforms.


  • Perform advanced engineering work concerned with the design, evaluation, planning, testing and operation of next generation US Navy shipboard electrical power systems and machinery.

  • Model Control System algorithms that simulate the operation of ships’ propulsion, electric plants and machinery.

  • Model Electric Plant, Power Generation, Switchboard, All-Electric Propulsion Systems, Power Electronic Converters and other machinery.

  • Create Stateflow diagrams for various logic based Event driven simulations.

  • Develop Real-Time executable C Code using Simulink / Embedded Coder tools.

  • Develop modules that simulate environmental conditions for sailors to train on and respond to simulated ship operation.

  • Maintains current knowledge of relevant technologies as assigned.

  • Participates in special projects as required.

  • Participates in setting up and conducting laboratory and field testing to include developing test methodologies, test planning and execution, related instrumentation and sensors, and data analysis.



  • BS in Electrical Engineering or related degree (preferably with power concentration).

  • MS Degree preferred with research experience but not required.

  • Demonstrated knowledge and experience with C/C++.

  • Strong background in Electric Plant, power generation and power distribution theory.

  • 5-8 years of related engineering experience using Matlab/Simulink or equivalent to support modeling and simulation.

  • Advanced knowledge of engineering principles, methods, and techniques.

  • Advanced knowledge of modeling and simulation of Naval Power Systems and associated hardware, software, and equipment. All-Electric Ship, Power Electronics.

  • Knowledge of developing mathematical models utilizing Matlab, Simulink, Simscape, SimpowerSystems, SimHydraulics. Building differential equations from basic Simulink Blocks.

  • Knowledge of C++ and Object Oriented Programming.

  • Knowledge of Electric Machines, Gas Turbines, Diesel Engines, Statistics, Physics, PID controllers, Hardware Design, Digital Signal Processing, Embedded Code, PLC and Logic Driven devices and Project Management.

  • Familiarity of Databases and Large Scale Model Development is a plus.

  • Advanced knowledge control system design and implementation.

  • Knowledge of CMMI processes.

  • Must be team player and excellent communicator.

    Must be able to obtain/maintain Secret clearance.


The work is typically performed at client site locations, which requires proper safety precautions; work may require some physical effort in the handling of light materials, boxes or equipment.

Successful applicants must either have an active government security clearance or the ability to receive approval upon position acceptance.

Travel may be required, approx. 10-15% travel is not out of the ordinary.
