Job Summary:

The Senior Network Engineer will assess and evaluate network architecture, infrastructure, and solutions for the Department of Education’s (ED) PIVOT program. This role will design, document, test, and implement network services (i.e. VPN, DNS, NAC, DHCP, IPAM, DMZs …) and review/recommend other PIVOT contractors’ network solutions to ensure best integration across the ED environment.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Provides architecture, design, development and implementation of network services including DNS, NAC, DHCP, VPN etc.

  • Ensures all network services meet security compliance standards

  • Coordinates and collaborates with other PIVOT network contractor to monitor, validate, and assist in troubleshooting the ED network

  • Supports the escalation and communication of status to agency management and internal customers

  • Monitors network traffic through the ED Trusted Internet Connection (TIC) to identify issues based on trending analysis

  • Serves as escalation point for complex issues from lower tier operations staff (network or overall environment performance issues)

  • Implements and supports an IP address management (IPAM) approach for ED

  • Develops standard operating procedures

  • Implements network monitoring solutions and for problem isolation, resolution, and root-cause analysis of network related problems

  • Create, review, and analyze reports on overall network usage and up-time trends, along with supporting recommendations

  • Participate in off-hours maintenance activities


  • Bachelor’s Degree in Business, Engineering, Computer Science, Information Systems, or Social Science (or equivalent 4 years of experience in IT field)

  • Ten (10) years of IT knowledge and demonstrated hands-on experience in network architecture, engineering, and administration

  • Experience architecting, designing, implementing, and supporting network services including DNS, NAC, DHCP, VPN etc.

  • Strong organizational skills and interpersonal skills to relate effectively to ED customer needs

  • Experience architecting, designing, and implementing a major upgrade for a (preferred) ITIL foundations certification (or ability to obtain certification within 1 month) required

Experience with at least 5 of the following technologies and services:

  • DNS (internal and external)

  • NAC

  • IP Address Management (IPAM)

  • DHCP

  • VPN

  • Firewalls

  • WAN Skills: BGP, EIGRP, OSPF, MPLS technologies

  • LAN Skills: Spanning tree, trunking, VLANs

  • DMZs

  • Network Management: Network Management Services (NMS) products, Netflow, SNMP
